This Binocular Review will help you learn more about binoculars and what to look for when buying a pair online

Binoculars & Scopes at B&H Photo

There are so many features, specs, styles and models to choose from when it comes to visual optics, which is why I have written this binocular review to make it easier for you when shopping for a new or discount pair online.  Binoculars are great for bird watching, boating, camping, site seeing, hunting, golf, night vision, sports and more with general features in all.

I read up on a few different reviews and information myself for binoculars and think a good place to start is with the general terms and specs to look for:

Magnification – making objects appear closer, the stronger (higher) the magnification the closer the object.  For example, 7x is the power of magnification making objects appear 7 times closer to you through the lens.    A zoom of 7x up to 12x seems to be strong enough for general viewing but if you go with a higher zoom you’ll need a tri-pod to keep the object from looking fuzzy.

Light Transmission or Aperture – meaning the amount of light captured in an image, depending on the objective front lens.  There are 2 numbers that indicates magnification and light transmission.  So let’s review, an 8 x 30 binocular would mean that the binoculars magnify by 8 times with a 30-millimeter opening.  The larger the aperture the more light the eye can see making it better at night, while the smaller lenses are more suitable in the day.  A lens between 20 – 60 aperture is great for recreational observation use but for other uses go with a higher number.

Resolution – the ability to see fine details.  The higher the resolution in binocular lenses the more color and detail the eye can see.  Again the larger the objective lens, the more detail will show no matter what the magnification is.  Quality, light, atmosphere, alignment, optics and visual acuity all factor in under resolution capability.

Focus – binoculars usually have a center focus that simultaneously focuses each eyepiece for easy use, but some binocular models have Diopter control to balance each eye individually and what’s called individual focus for specific objects or uses.

Field-of-view – the size/width of an area you can see through a binocular, usually measured and viewed at 1000 yards.  The higher the zoom or magnification the smaller the field of view and area seen.

Optical Prisms – come in two types: Porro prism binoculars produce a deeper, more 3-dimentional image allowing a larger field of view and higher magnification, while Roof prisms come in smaller size making the image sharper and clearer.
